Phase one – Medical Use: Clark County commissioners doled out 101 permits to businesses wanting to grow and process medical marijuana today during a marathon public hearing that stretched seven hours.
The commission approved 58 applications to grow marijuana in unincorporated Clark County and 38 permits to manufacture marijuana-‐‑infused edibles and oils. The commission also approved five applications to operate laboratories that will test the quality of the marijuana.
The limit of only 18 dispensaries complicated the process.
“If they had not limited the number of dispensaries to 40 in all of Southern Nevada, we would have granted more licenses to make medical marijuana more available,” Sisolak said. “Right now dispensaries will be located five to ten miles from each other, which is a big business gap.”
The commission chairman is a believer in the benefits of medicinal use, and as a result, he supported not taxing its sale for profit even though the state will add an excise tax.
“Other counties see medicinal marijuana as an opportunity to raise money, but Clark County will add a business license fee as a percentage only to recoup the cost of hiring three inspectors and a clerk to check licenses,” said Sisolak. “I don’t feel the county should make any money from it.”
